Shopify accessibility: overlays, audits and fixes compared
There are five common ways a Shopify store deals with accessibility. They differ in what they change, what you get on paper, and what they cost. This page sets them side by side with published prices, including ours, and says plainly what each one does not do.
Prices were read on each provider's own page on 24 October 2026 and are linked below. Prices change, so check the source before you decide. We sell one of the options on this page, the Shopify Accessibility Audit & Fix.
Side by side
| Approach | Example and price | What you get | What it does not include | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overlay widget | accessiBe accessWidget: from $59/month or $490/year. UserWay widget: from $490/year.1,2 | A script added on top of the store that applies automated adjustments and a visitor toolbar, with ongoing scanning. accessiBe's $3,990/year Scale plan adds yearly manual testing. | Changes to the theme's own code. The FTC fined accessiBe $1 million in 2025 over claims that its tool could make any site WCAG compliant.8 In 2025, 983 of 3,948 US website accessibility lawsuits (24.90%) named sites that had a widget installed.9 | Stores that want a low monthly cost and a visitor toolbar, and understand it is not a code fix. |
| Audit only | HalfAccessible Shopify audit: $2,000 fixed. Accessible.org: typically $1,250 to $2,250. complyTech small business audit: $1,500 to $3,500.3,4,5 | A manual audit and report. HalfAccessible tests with JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver and includes a re-test. complyTech includes a VPAT, a developer fix guide and a re-test, and describes its staff as IAAP certified. | The fixes. HalfAccessible quotes remediation separately; Accessible.org says fixes stay with your team; complyTech provides instructions for your developer. | Stores with a developer who can make the fixes, or that need a VPAT or a full screen-reader audit. |
| Audit and fixes by a specialist | Kaspian Fuad (Shopify developer): $1,750 to $5,000 combined, fixes at $50 an hour.6 | An audit plus hands-on fixes in the theme code, estimated at 15 to 40 hours of work. | A fixed total: the fix cost depends on the hours the store needs. | Stores that want a developer to fix the theme and are comfortable with hourly billing. |
| Subscription | TestParty Pro: $599/month or $6,469/year.7 | Weekly full-site scans. The listing also describes source-code fixes as pull requests and monthly manual audits with screen readers, without saying which plan includes them. | A one-off price: it is an ongoing monthly cost. | Larger stores that want continuous, ongoing work and can budget for it every month. |
| Fixed-price audit and fixes (ours) | iTechVista Shopify Accessibility Audit & Fix: $1,495 fixed. | WCAG 2.2 Level AA audit of up to 10 page templates (automated scan, expert code review, keyboard testing, and a human screen-reader check of the main shopping path with NVDA and a phone screen reader), hand-made fixes in a copy of your theme, a written report, a re-test, an accessibility statement and a 30-day fix warranty. 10 business days. | Screen-reader testing of every template (ours covers the main shopping path), IAAP or any other certification, and VPAT or ACR documents. | Small and mid-sized Shopify stores without a developer that want the theme fixed for one known price. |
Where other options are stronger
Full screen-reader audits
HalfAccessible's audit is tested with JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver, and TestParty's listing describes monthly manual audits with screen readers. Our human screen-reader check covers the main shopping path, from the home page to the start of checkout, not every template.
Certification and VPAT
complyTech includes a VPAT and describes its staff as IAAP certified. If a buyer, school or government contract asks you for a VPAT or ACR, an audit firm that issues one is the right choice. We do not issue them.
Ongoing work
A subscription keeps someone working on your store every month. Ours is a one-off project with a 30-day warranty; after that, keeping up is your job, with our Remedy app if you want it.
Lowest monthly cost
An overlay costs the least to start, from $59 a month. It does not change your theme's code, which is what an audit and fix does.
Questions to ask any provider
- Who makes the fixes? A report you cannot act on leaves the work with you.
- Is the price fixed, or hourly? And what happens if the work runs over?
- How is it tested? Automated scan only, keyboard, screen readers, or all of them.
- What do you get on paper? A report, a re-test, a statement, a VPAT. Ask for a sample.
- Does it change your theme, or sit on top of it?
- What does the provider promise? Be wary of anyone promising "100% compliance" or protection from lawsuits. No one can.
