Free Shopify Accessibility Statement Generator

Write an honest accessibility statement for your Shopify store in about five minutes. Fill in the form, check the preview, then copy it into a page on your store. No install, no sign-up and no email address.

The statement follows the structure the W3C recommends: your commitment, the standard you are working to, what you have done, what you know is not yet fixed, and how a shopper can reach you if something gets in their way. It never claims more than you tell it to, and it can fill in your known issues from a free quick check of your store.

Your answers stay in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you use the quick check, which reads your public store pages only.

How to add it to your Shopify store

  1. Click Copy as HTML above.
  2. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Pages, then Add page. Title it "Accessibility statement".
  3. In the content editor, click the Show HTML button (it looks like <>), paste, and save.
  4. Go to Online Store, then Navigation, open your footer menu and add a link to the new page, so shoppers can find it from every page.
  5. Put a reminder in your calendar to review it every few months, and whenever you fix one of the known issues or change theme.

What a useful statement includes

Part Why it is there
A named standard "Accessible" means nothing on its own. Name a version and level. Level AA is what laws refer to: EU law currently points to WCAG 2.1 AA, and WCAG 2.2 AA includes everything in 2.1.
An honest status Most stores partially conform. Saying so, and listing what is not fixed, is more credible than a blanket claim a shopper can disprove in a minute.
Known issues Tells a shopper what to expect and that you know about it, and gives you a list to work through.
A way to get help The most important line. A shopper who cannot finish an order needs a person who will help them buy anyway.
A date A statement with no date, or one from three years ago, reads as abandoned.

Keep the known issues list short, and true

Remedy is our Shopify app. It scans your storefront in a real browser with axe-core, the engine auditors use, and explains every issue in plain English with its WCAG 2.2 criterion. It fixes what can be fixed and tests each fix on your store, discarding any that fail. Your live theme is never edited: fixes go into a copy you preview and publish. You get a dated record of what was found, fixed and still open, which is exactly what your statement's known issues should reflect. The Audit plan is free.

Questions

Is this generator free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and nothing to install. Your answers are kept only in your own browser.
Does a statement make my store accessible?
No. A statement describes where your store stands; it does not change it. Publishing one while ignoring the issues it lists helps nobody. Treat the known issues as a to-do list.
Do I legally need an accessibility statement?
It depends on where you sell and how big your business is, and this page is not legal advice. The European Accessibility Act, in force since 28 June 2025, requires many businesses selling online to EU consumers to publish information about how their service meets accessibility requirements; microenterprises providing services are exempt. In the United States there is no general rule requiring a statement, but one is widely recommended.
How do I know whether my store is ready for the EAA?
The free EAA readiness check tells you whether the Act is likely to apply, and checks your published statement and the common problems a shopper or regulator would see first.
Should I say my store fully conforms?
Only if a full audit found no failures. Claims of full conformance are easy to test and, when false, can be quoted back at you. "Partially conforms" with a clear list of known issues is the honest answer for most stores.
What does "Fill from a quick check" do?
It runs our free Shopify accessibility checker on your home page and a product page, and turns each problem it finds into a plain-English known issue. It only reads your public pages and cannot see everything, so add anything else you know about.
How do I find which product images need alt text?
The free Shopify alt text checker estimates how many of your product images have none and lists the products to start with.
Is my store's translation part of accessibility?
Declaring the right language helps screen readers pronounce your pages correctly. The free Shopify translation checker shows whether your language pages declare the language they are written in.
