Free Shopify Accessibility Checker
Enter your store address and get a quick accessibility check of your home page and a product page in about ten seconds. No install, no sign-up and no email address.
It checks 12 common problems that stop shoppers who use screen readers, keyboards or zoom from browsing and buying. Each one is mapped to a WCAG 2.2 success criterion, and each finding shows the exact element on your page.
Works with any public Shopify store, including yourstore.myshopify.com. Password-protected stores cannot be read from outside.
What this checks
| Check | WCAG | Why it matters to a shopper |
|---|---|---|
| Images have alt text | 1.1.1 (A) | A product photo with no description is skipped, so a blind shopper cannot tell what is for sale. |
| Alt text is not a file name | 1.1.1 (A) | "IMG_4031.jpg" is read aloud exactly like that. |
| Links have a name | 2.4.4 (A) | Cart, account and social icons with no text are announced only as "link". |
| Buttons have a name | 4.1.2 (A) | Menu, close and quantity buttons with only an icon are announced only as "button". |
| Form fields have labels | 1.3.1 (A) | A search or newsletter box with only placeholder text has no lasting label. |
| Page language is declared | 3.1.1 (A) | Screen readers choose their pronunciation from it. |
| Page has a title | 2.4.2 (A) | The title is the first thing announced, and the label on the browser tab. |
| Pinch-to-zoom is allowed | 1.4.4 (AA) | Shoppers with low vision zoom in on phones. Some themes block it. |
| Embedded frames have a title | 4.1.2 (A) | Videos, maps and chat widgets need a title to be identified. |
| No forced tab order | 2.4.3 (A) | A positive tabindex makes the Tab key jump around the page. |
| Skip-to-content link | 2.4.1 (A) | Without it, keyboard users tab through the whole menu on every page. |
| One main heading | 1.3.1 (A) | Screen reader users navigate by headings, starting from the h1. |
What a quick check cannot see
This tool reads the HTML your store sends. It does not run your theme's JavaScript, so it cannot see menus, drawers or pop-ups that are built after the page loads. It also cannot measure colour contrast, test keyboard focus, or check every page of your catalogue. A clean result here means none of these 12 problems were found on these two pages. It does not mean the store is accessible, and no automated tool can tell you that your store meets a legal standard.
Want the full scan, and the fixes?
Remedy is our Shopify app. It scans your storefront in a real browser with axe-core, the engine auditors use, and explains every issue in plain English with its WCAG 2.2 criterion. It fixes what can be fixed and tests each fix on your store, discarding any that fail. Your live theme is never edited: fixes go into a copy you preview and publish. You get a dated record of what was found, fixed and still open. The Audit plan is free.

Questions
- Is this checker really free?
- Yes. There is no sign-up and nothing to install. Results are not stored anywhere.
- Does it work on any Shopify theme?
- Yes, on any public Shopify storefront, including Dawn and other free themes and paid themes. Stores with a custom (headless) front end are not served by Shopify's pages, so the quick check cannot read them.
- Which pages does it check?
- Your home page and the page of your first product, read from your store's public product feed. Those two pages carry most of your theme's shared code: the header, menu, footer and product template.
- Will it change anything in my store?
- No. It only reads the public pages any visitor can see.
- Do you check translations too?
- Yes: the free Shopify translation checker shows which of your language pages load, link back correctly and were translated at all.
- Do I need an accessibility statement?
- Most stores benefit from one, and many selling to EU customers need one. The free Shopify accessibility statement generator writes an honest one and can fill in its known issues from this check.
- Can I check alt text on all my product images?
- Yes: the free Shopify alt text checker samples images from across your whole catalogue and shows which products to fix first.
- Can you check my theme's colour contrast?
- Yes: the free Shopify color contrast checker reads every colour scheme in Dawn- and Horizon-based themes and shows which text, links and buttons are too faint.
- Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my store?
- The free EAA readiness check helps you find out in three questions, then checks your accessibility statement, the basics above and your theme colours together.
- Is there a full checklist?
- Yes: the Shopify accessibility checklist covers 19 checks, including the ones this quick check cannot see, such as keyboard use and focus rings.
- What is WCAG?
- The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, published by the W3C. Level A and AA success criteria are the ones most accessibility laws and policies refer to. This checker reports findings against named criteria and makes no legal judgement about your store.
