Is your catalogue ready for AI shopping assistants?

In March 2026 Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts, which put merchant products in front of AI assistants: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search, and the Gemini app. It rolled out in stages rather than all at once, and it works from the Shopify Catalog, so for eligible stores there is no separate integration to build.

Which raises a question that is easy to put off. When an assistant reads your catalogue instead of a shopper reading your storefront, is there enough there for it to work with?

An assistant cannot see your storefront

A shopper on a product page has a lot to go on besides the text. They can see the photograph, the size chart, the review stars, the theme's trust badges, the little note in your announcement bar. Much of what persuades them is visual, and none of it is written down.

An assistant has your product data. If a field is blank, that information does not exist as far as the assistant is concerned, however obvious it looks on the page. A product whose description is empty is not a product with an obvious description; it is a product with no description.

This is the same shift that happened with search engines two decades ago, with one difference. A search engine returned your page and let the shopper judge it. An assistant reads your data, forms a view, and answers the shopper directly. If your product is thin, it is thin at the moment the comparison is being made.

What makes a product legible

A real description. Not a slogan and not a repeated title. What the thing is, what it is for, what is in the box, who it suits. Assistants are answering questions like "will this fit a 15-inch laptop" and they can only answer from what you wrote.

Attributes, not prose. Material, dimensions, capacity, compatibility, power, weight. These are what comparisons are built from. If the only place your product's size appears is inside a paragraph, it may still be read, but a structured field is unambiguous.

Image alt text. Written for the image, not copied from the title. This is the only text description your photographs have, and it does two jobs at once: an assistant can use it, and a shopper using a screen reader can finally tell your products apart. Five photos of one product that all say the product's name are not five descriptions.

SEO title and meta description. Still the short, deliberate summary of the product, and still the fields most often left empty on exactly the products that need them.

Variant titles that mean something. "Option 1 / Option 2" tells an assistant nothing. Colour, size and capacity do.

Where the gaps usually are

In our experience the gaps are not evenly spread, and they are rarely on the products you think about. They cluster in whatever arrived in bulk: a supplier import, a dropship catalogue, a range added in a hurry two years ago. Those products often have a title, a price and a photograph, and nothing else.

They are also invisible from the admin, because nobody scrolls 400 products looking at which fields are empty. You find out when you go looking deliberately, or when something downstream is working from the blanks.

Two free ways to see where you stand

You can check part of this without installing anything. Our free Shopify alt text checker reads the alt text saved on your product images and shows which products have none, and our free Shopify accessibility checker scans your storefront for twelve common problems, missing image descriptions among them. Neither needs an account, and both read only what your store already publishes publicly.

Filling the gaps

GemAI Store Manager is our Shopify app. It gives every product an AI-shopping readiness score, with the gaps that hold that product back, on every plan including the free one. That is the part relevant here: it tells you which products an assistant cannot say much about, and why.

A pass then fills only the fields it finds missing: description, SEO title, meta description, and image alt text written from the image itself. An SEO title or meta description counts as missing only when it is empty; a description also counts as missing when it is shorter than 20 characters, so a placeholder one-liner is rewritten rather than preserved. Every product edit can be undone with one click, or the whole pass at once, which matters when you are changing a lot of products at a time. Discounts, stock and store pages can be changed by command too, each change previewed first and undone in one click.

The free plan does 500 products per pass and uses your own Gemini key, which is enough to see what it does to your own catalogue before deciding anything. The Pro plan is 19 dollars a month for up to 5,000 products per pass, a daily store briefing, and undo reaching back 10,000 changes, with a 7-day trial.

The unglamorous conclusion

There is no trick to being legible to an assistant. It is the same work that makes a catalogue good for people who cannot see your photographs, and for shoppers comparing two products at eleven at night: say what the thing is, in the fields built to hold that. The assistants simply made the cost of blank fields easier to notice.
