Sidekick writes product copy. Here's how to save it to your store.

If you have asked Shopify's Sidekick to write product copy, you already know the useful part: it reads your catalogue, works out which products are missing a description or an SEO field, and writes them without trampling the text you already have. The question we kept hitting was a duller one. Once the copy exists, how does it get into the store?

What happened when we tried it

On 12 October 2026 we ran this on a development store with 17 products on the Basic plan, and asked for the whole catalogue rather than a sample:

Go through every product in my catalogue and, for each one that is missing a description or an SEO title or meta description, write them. Do the whole catalogue, not a sample.

Sidekick checked all 17 products, reported that 16 needed copy, and wrote 45 missing fields across them. It preserved the copy that was already there, and it did not invent specifications. That is genuinely the hard part, and it did it well.

Then it told us the copy had not been saved, that bulk updating was not available, and it prepared a CSV covering every affected product. The instructions were: download the CSV, go to Products, choose Import, tick Overwrite products with matching handles, review the preview, and confirm.

Two caveats, because we would rather be useful than dramatic. Sidekick said bulk updating was not available here, and we cannot tell you whether "here" meant that chat surface, that store type, or that plan. And Sidekick changes constantly, so this is a dated reading from one small store rather than a standing fact about the product. If you are on a paid plan with a real catalogue, try it yourself before you believe anyone about it, including us.

The CSV import is the step worth thinking about

A CSV import with Overwrite products with matching handles ticked is a bulk write to a live catalogue, matched by handle. It is a normal Shopify operation and plenty of merchants run it without incident. But it has two properties worth naming before you run it on 400 products rather than 17.

The first is that it is all or nothing. The import applies the file. If one row has a description you would have rewritten, or a handle that matches a product you did not intend to touch, the fix is another import.

The second is that there is no revert button. Shopify does not keep a "before" copy of each field for you to roll back to. If you want one, you make it yourself, which in practice means exporting your products to a second CSV first and keeping it somewhere you will be able to find in a month.

That is the honest workflow, and for a small catalogue it is fine. Export, generate, import, keep the export. The friction shows up at scale and when something is wrong in a way you only notice a week later.

Where our app fits

GemAI Store Manager is our Shopify app, and it exists for the save step rather than the writing step. A pass checks each product and fills only the fields it finds missing: description, SEO title, meta description, and image alt text written from the image itself. An SEO title or meta description counts as missing only when it is empty. A description counts as missing when it is empty or shorter than 20 characters, so a one-word description will be rewritten rather than left alone — recorded and undoable like any other edit, but worth knowing before you run a pass over a catalogue full of placeholders.

The part that matters here is that every product edit is recorded, and every one can be undone with a single click, or the whole pass at once. There is no CSV in the loop, so there is nothing to download, nothing to keep as a backup, and no bulk overwrite matched by handle.

It also gives each product an AI-shopping readiness score, with the gaps that hold that product back, which is a different question from whether a field is blank. And discounts, stock and store pages can be changed by command rather than through the admin, each change previewed first and undone in one click.

The free plan does 500 products per pass and uses your own Gemini key. The Pro plan is 19 dollars a month for up to 5,000 products per pass, a daily store briefing, and undo reaching back 10,000 changes, with a 7-day trial.

Which to use

These are not really competing. Sidekick is free, built in, needs no key, and is good at reading a catalogue and writing for it. If your catalogue is small enough that a CSV import is a five-minute job, that may be the whole answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something.

If your catalogue is large, or you want the write-back to be reversible without maintaining your own export, that is the gap our app was built for.

You can also find out where you stand before installing anything. Our free Shopify alt text checker samples product images across your catalogue and tells you which products have no image descriptions, and the free Shopify accessibility checker scans your storefront for twelve common problems. Neither needs an account.
