Place ten real services on both axes
Task
Take ten services your organisation or your household actually uses and place each on the service-model axis and the deployment-model axis separately. The exercise is only useful with real examples, because the interesting cases are the ones that do not fit the textbook diagram.
Steps
- List ten real services in
lab/models.csvwith the columnsservice,service_model,deployment_model,who_patches_the_os,why. - For the service model, decide by asking what the customer is still obliged to patch: the guest OS means IaaS-like, only the code means PaaS-like, only configuration means SaaS-like.
- For the deployment model, decide only on ownership and tenancy -- do not let the service model influence this column.
- Find at least one entry where the two columns are a combination the textbook diagram does not show, such as a single-tenant hosted application, and write a sentence on why it exists.
- Add a final column
shared_responsibility_surprisenaming one thing you had assumed the vendor was responsible for and are not certain about.
